Google just gave Huawei a wakeup call The Chinese company urgently needs to step up its software game.

PA Wire/PA Images
It's been a tumultuous week for Huawei. Five days ago, President Trump declared a national emergency to ban the sales and use of telecom equipment that pose "unacceptable" risks to national security. While the executive order didn't explicitly name countries or companies, it tasked the Commerce Department with drafting enforcement plans. Hours later, the department added Huawei to its so-called entity list, indicating it believes the company is violating "national security and foreign policy interest."
A few days later, the department eased up on the ban slightly, with a spokesperson saying it might grant Huawei a temporary license to prevent the interruption of service for existing networks. (Update: At 6 PM ET on Monday, the Commerce Department issued that temporary license.) Still, companies like Google, Intel and Qualcomm have since announced that they will comply with the ban, suspending service and supplies to the Chinese electronics giant.

What might change

Not all of these are devastating developments. While a Bloomberg reportsaid chipmakers like Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom have told staff they won't be selling parts to Huawei until further notice, the Chinese company is capable of making its own chips. Sure, it uses lower-end Qualcomm processors for some of its midrange phones. But in recent years, it's been moving its handset business towards adopting its own Kirin chipsets and Balong modems. Huawei's Kirin 900-series options of late have proven to be powerful enough to rival Qualcomm's high-end Snapdragons, so it's likely its phones won't suffer performance setbacks by switching.
It gets trickier with laptop processors. The space is dominated by Intel, and, as far as we know, Huawei has had no experience making PC chipsets. Even if it does or, and this is less probable, if it partners with AMD to use its CPUs, consumers tend to prefer Intel-branded components. It's most likely that, for the foreseeable future, Huawei's laptop ambitions are on hold.

The loss of Android

The heaviest of the blows, though, is Google pulling Android support. The vast majority of Huawei's phones and tablets run Android, meaning a large portion of its consumer portfolio would be affected. Plus, software isn't Huawei's strong suit, so even if it does default to the backup OS it's been prepping for such situations, chances are the experience will fall short.
To be clear, Huawei is still allowed to use Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to build its own system, and Google said, "For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices." If you currently own a Huawei phone, you will still be able to access your third-party apps. Those who rely on Google's own services like Gmail, Google Drive, Maps and YouTube, for example, will likely need to find alternatives. Considering how many people are locked into these options and enjoy the convenience of having their information synced across various devices, though, this might be a deal-breaker for some.
The loss of Android support also means Huawei's handsets will no longer get OS updates. So if you were holding out for Android Q or even Android Pie to arrive on your device, you might have to give up.
All is not lost, though. Huawei said in a statement it will "continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products." We also learned earlier about its backup OS that might be an adequate replacement for Android.
Huawei P30 and P30 Pro hands-on
Given all the complaints lobbed at Huawei's EMUI software on its phones, it's unlikely the company's alternate OS will be impressive. Its stab at a wearable OS on the Huawei Watch GT was lacking compared to Google's Wear OS, too.
But in spite of its software quirks, Huawei was still able to sell enough smartphones in 2018 to overtake Apple as the second-largest phonemakerin the world. Thanks to outstanding devices like the Mate 20 and P20 Pro, the company sold 200 million units that year, even without access to the US market. Huawei even stated it aimed to be the world's biggest smartphone seller in 2020, though that seems an unlikely goal now.
The company clearly doesn't need the US: It has been able to thrive off its business elsewhere in the world. The more pertinent question now is whether the rest of the world will continue to buy Huawei devices without Android. Given the popularity of Google's OS around the globe, Huawei seriously needs to deliver adequate app and OS replacements if it wants to survive outside its native China. Even if the ban is lifted and suppliers resume business with the company, it can't continue the way it says. Some of Huawei's most important partners have just turned their backs on the company over serious allegations, and there's no telling when an improved relationship might turn sour again. If Huawei wants a chance to avoid losing its footing, firming up its software and proving its products are worth using has to be a top priority.

GM will deliver over-the-air updates to 'most' vehicles by 2023

Today, General Motors unveiled its new electronics system. The platform will make "smartphone-like" over-the-air software updates possible, and it should be rolled out in most GM vehicles by 2023, the company says. We'll see it first in the 2020 Cadillac CT5 sedan, which should go into production later this year.

Tesla has been able to update its software via the internet for years, but conventional automakers have been slow to follow suit. GM is one of the first to introduce the capability, and its new electronic system will be able to manage up to 4.5 terabytes of data processing per hour -- that's five times more than GM's current systems can handle.
GM says cybersecurity is a "key pillar" of the platform. And, according to Reuters, the company previously said it would not use over-the-air updates for safety-critical systems, like braking. While there are potential safety and security implications, over-the-air updates will likely become standard industry wide as automobile manufacturers and tech companies alike double down on automotive software.

Chinese President has officially opened the 55km world’s longest sea crossing bridge.

Chinese President has officially opened the 55km world’s longest sea crossing bridge. The sixth longest bridge on earth took nine years to complete.
The new bridge connects Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.

Part of the total crossing consists of a 30km bridge that crosses the sea. A 6.7km underwater tunnel also runs between two artificial islands to allow large cargo ship containers to pass through.
To put the length of the bridge into perspective, the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos (the second longest bridge in Africa) has a total length of 11.8 km.
For now, only private transports that has special permits will be allowed on the bridge. Hong Kong residents will also need special permits to access the toll paying bridge .

Gionee Facing Financial Woes In China, Considering Filing For Bankruptcy

Gionee Facing Financial Woes In China, Considering Filing For Bankruptcy
A few years ago Gionee was a strong force to reckon with in the Nigerian mobile sector and for a really long time we haven’t heard from them , no new devices, nothing at all . The big question on our minds is :
What Really Happened To Gionee Mobile?
Gionee has been facing a tough time over the past few months and is almost on the verge of bankruptcy.
The company has been facing financial woes in China, and if the latest report is to be believed, Gionee is considering filing for bankruptcy. There is also a possibility of liquidation after the company failed to pay financial creditors, marketing firms and about 400 suppliers.
According to reports from Beijing Youth daily, Gionee is on the verge of bankruptcy after owning money to financial institutions, suppliers, advertising and marketing agencies. Gionee currently owes $2.45 billion. And the chairman of Gionee “Liu”, had earlier lost CNY1 billion while gambling with the company assets.
Gionee, which ranked behind Apple in sixth place for handset sales in China last year, is now on the verge of bankruptcy restructuring as suppliers have halted component sales after failing to receive payments for several months, according to the report.
Liu admitted in the interview that Gionee’s total debts amount to 17 billion yuan($2,447,065,000), with 10 billion yuan($1,439,450,000) of this owed to banks, 5 billion yuan($719,725,000) to upstream suppliers and about 2 billion to advertising agencies.
If restructuring is not a viable option, Gionee will go into liquidation. This probably is the reason why you haven’t been seeing new devices from the company lately.

Qualcomm claims it has won an injunction against Apple that effectively bans the import and sale of a number of iPhone models, ranging from the iPhone 6S to the iPhone

US chip-maker Qualcomm claims it has won an injunction against Apple that effectively bans the import and sale of a number of iPhone models, ranging from the iPhone 6S to the iPhone X.
The preliminary order, issued by a Chinese court, is the latest in step a continuing feud between the two tech giants over intellectual property.

However, Apple says all of its iPhone models remain on sale in the country.
The disputed patents relate to software rather than hardware.
The injunction affects devices running older versions of Apple’s iOS operating system and not those running the latest version, iOS 12.
The court found Apple had violated two of Qualcomm’s patents – one regarding photograph resizing and the other related to how apps are managed on a touch screen.

“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us,” said Don Rosenberg, general counsel of Qualcomm.
However, Apple responded that the attempted ban was “another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world”.

The decision has successfully prohibited all importation and sales of iPhone smartphones such as the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X in China

Following the long and harsh fight in court between Apple and Qualcomm, the Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court in China court ruled in favor of Qualcomm. This decision is regarding two patent infringement claims by Qualcomm, a US chipmaker. The decision has successfully prohibited all importation and sales of iPhone smartphones such as the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X in China. As you probably are aware, this decision is a big blow to Apple since China is the world’s biggest phone market.
Anyway Apple has promised to appeal the judgment. The relationship between the two organizations has damaged beyond repair as both tech mammoths are at loggerheads over licensing rates Qualcomm and other wireless intellectual property (IP) holders charge smartphone OEMs for use of their standard essential patents (SEPs).
This implies Apple infringed two Qualcomm licenses identified with resizing photographs and arranging applications. General counsel for Qualcomm Don Rosenberg told Reuters in an announcement “Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us.”
However, reacting to the judgement, Apple says
“Qualcomm’s effort to ban our products is another desperate move by a company whose illegal practices are under investigation by regulators around the world,” Apple said in a statement to CNBC. “All iPhone models remain available for our customers in China. Qualcomm is asserting three patents they had never raised before, including one which has already been invalidated. We will pursue all our legal options through the courts.”
How Qualcomm is also fighting to block the sales of the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X in the United States and a final judgement is expected in January next year.

My phone at the bank

MY PHONE AT THE BANK
I went to bank this afternoon after solatul jumu'ah to complain about an update on my account i did last month that nothing has reflected on my account.
I went to bank last month to update my account with my national ID card but unfortunately, I registered with two name with them and I have three name on my national ID card which made it futile. I was directed to do a newspaper publication on change of name with an affidavit on change of name which I presented everything for them last month ending.
I logged a complain today on it with all the needed documents with me. After long waiting on the queue, I was answered to. As if I had known before, their customer care line asked for the documents again, and I presented it to her. She asked for the photocopies of the documents, I asked her for their photocopy machine and she replied me that it is faulty that I should go and do it outside.
In an hurry, I forgetfully left my phone on her desk. I checked the time, it was already 15:48 I quickly rushed down to do the photocopies. When I was returning from where I went to do photocopies I remembered that I have forget my phone at the bank. I assured myself that I will surely get it when I get to the bank.
I returned to the bank in the hope of finding my phone on the customer care desk which was not. I quickly changed my mind that maybe I left it at where I do the photocopies and when I finished with what I am doing in the bank I will go there.
I was afraid of accusing anybody with stealing of phone at the bank. I wanted to inform the security man that's near the desk but I wanted to finished what I came for first.
Although, the woman I left before I went for the photocopy was still at the sit, attended to by the customer care. I refused not to asked her, for not to count it as an embarrassment(especially since she is a woman and as a nature of women). I was thinking of borrowing phone to call it, but I refused because most people will think otherwise
No so long, as many things coming across to my mind. By Allah's glory, I heard ringing of phone from that woman's purse. I quickly challenged her to pick the call to know whether it is my phone since I am also using infinix ringing tone. She opened her purse and brought my phone out, it was airtel that called.
I collected my phone while one girl was watching the whole scene. I noticed that she wanted to talk when that woman gave me the phone. But after that woman left she started to talk and the security man accused me of not telling him to disgrace that woman uselessly with all her big girl.
After that, everybody started to saying different things in accusing that woman of theft.
